WHAT IS CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION?


FCS students can receive a certification to teach in public or private institutions. Their area of study in FCS would generally be called, “career and technical education.” Career and technical education (CTE) students are prepared to teach secondary level students in family and consumer sciences related areas (e.g., child development, merchandising, textiles, or food science).
In college, CTE majors may study issues, which include but are not limited to:
Sex education in schools
Prayer in schools
Drugs or violence in schools
Trends in FCS education
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A DEGREE IN FCS - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION?
Teach!…Teach FCS classes such as nutrition, health, child and family studies, or textiles/merchandising in middle or high schools.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS FOR FCS EDUCATORS:
Professional associations for CTE majors include:
National Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences
National Association Teacher Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)
Future Educators AssociationThere are many more professional associations in which one can get involved as a CTE major. Talk to your advisors and mentors about professional associations you can get involved with that match your career interests.
